Dr. Jonas Salk, the pioneering immunologist who developed the first polio vaccine, called HIV/AIDS the metaphoric disease of our time.

Not even during the polio epidemics of the 1950's has humanity been faced with as widespread and impenetrable a viral menace as HIV, nor with such devastating social consequences as brought forth by AIDS-related morbidity.

Dr. Salk's polio work prevented the crippling effects of the polio virus on the human body.

With HIV/AIDS, Dr. Salk sought to prevent the crippling effects of the HIV virus on the immune system itself through an innovative technique called T-cell immunotherapy, an innovative technique co-developed by Dr. Salk's collaborator in the HIV theory, Professor Henri Atlan of Hadassah University Hospital in Jerusalem.  They published their first paper together in 1992.

Simultaneously, Dr. Salk brought together an international group of scientists to look at HIV/AIDS from this unique perspective seeking what he referred to as a "live and let live" solution.
