One big pharma has already halted their future anti-retroviral research. Weak profit projections given generics in combination with political pressure to reduce pricing were the reasons given.
But the real challenge is this - unless the HIV-infected individual achieves 95% compliance in taking their meds, drug resistance is almost ensured requiring the next formulation - if one is available.
For these reasons, immunotherapeutic approaches like ours are gaining favor. But, again, big pharmas are not interested due to lack of adequate profit potential.
And yet, success in the technique with HIV and other auto-immune diseases could benefit such as multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes and potentially some cancers.
